Welcoming Dr. Leon Wreyford as a Speaker at the 12th International Cancer, Oncology & Therapy Conference & Exhibition 2026
The 12th International Cancer, Oncology & Therapy Conference & Exhibition 2026, taking place April 09–11, 2026, in Dubai, UAE, is proud to feature Dr. Leon Wreyford (Australia) as a distinguished speaker. Representing the University of Southern Queensland, Dr. Wreyford brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective that bridges oncology, digital health, and patient communication.
Advancing Understanding of Patient Support in the Digital Era
Dr. Wreyford will present his research titled:
“Exploring The Benefits Of Cancer Patient Online Peer Support and The Risks of Misinformation That Could Lead To Treatment Discordance or Nonadherence: A Mixed Methods Scoping Review.”
As digital communities increasingly shape how patients seek information and emotional support, understanding both the advantages and potential risks of online peer networks has become critically important. Dr. Wreyford’s work examines how these platforms can empower patients while also highlighting how misinformation may unintentionally influence treatment decisions, adherence, and patient–clinician relationships.
His research contributes to an evolving conversation about ensuring that digital engagement enhances—rather than disrupts—evidence-based cancer care.
Academic and Research Background
Dr. Wreyford completed his PhD in 2025 through the Australian Government’s Research Training Program at the University of Southern Queensland. His doctoral work focuses on cancer patient treatment nonadherence, particularly the role of patient information sources and communication between patients and oncology professionals.
He has already published two peer-reviewed articles (2023, 2025) on this topic, with a third manuscript (2026) currently under review. The research he will present at the conference is part of an ongoing program of study and is expected to become his fourth scholarly publication upon completion.
In addition, Dr. Wreyford holds a master’s degree in health informatics from the University of Tasmania, strengthening his expertise at the intersection of healthcare delivery, information systems, and patient engagement.
A Career Integrating Healthcare, Technology, and Communication
Beyond academia, Dr. Wreyford brings more than two decades of industry experience. His business-to-business work in Australia has included developing productivity solutions for medical professionals and providing relationship management services to medical centres.
Prior to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, he served as a media consultant to leading hospitals in Singapore, specializing in patient-orientation media designed to improve healthcare communication and patient understanding. He has also played a significant role in organizing medical technology conferences across Japan, India, and Singapore, and is recognized for his expertise in sponsorship acquisition and healthcare collaboration.
Dr. Wreyford’s current research is conducted in collaboration with Professor Raj Gururajan, University of Southern Queensland, further strengthening the academic foundation of this important work.
Why This Research Matters Now
In today’s connected world, cancer patients often turn to online communities for reassurance, shared experiences, and practical guidance. While these platforms can provide valuable psychosocial support, they also raise important questions about:
Information accuracy and trust
The influence of peer-shared experiences on treatment decisions
Strategies to reduce misinformation-related risks
Strengthening clinician–patient communication in a digital environment
Dr. Wreyford’s research aims to help healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers better understand how to harness the benefits of online peer support while safeguarding treatment adherence and clinical outcomes.
